Fostering Inclusive Action Sports

Driving women+’s participation in outdoor action sports

A step-by-step strategy development process for national and regional stakeholders ready to make action sports more inclusive for women+.

FIAS – An introduction

This strategy development process is designed to help national and regional stakeholders in action sports strengthen gender inclusion across their sport.

Drawing on the evidence-based FIAS Framework, it provides a structured process for reflecting on current practice, identifying opportunities for development, and implementing meaningful actions that improve the participation and retention of women+.

I use the FIAS framework to plan the promotion, events and strategic direction of Hafod Trails. It really helps keep inclusion at the heart of our work here.”

Who is the process for?

Develop a strategic approach to tackling gender inequality in outdoor sports

The Framework can help develop strategic approaches to tackling gender inequality in action sports. Its phased and intentional approach builds a coherent strategy with clear goals, timelines, and measures of success, making efforts more sustainable and outcomes easier to evaluate.

What the process delivers

At the end of the FIAS strategy development process, organisations will have a strategic plan that builds on existing strengths, leverages key partnerships and networks, identifies achievable actions, and creates lasting impact for the inclusion of women+ in sport.

How the process works

This process will guide your organisations through a series of steps, moving from understanding the current context to planning and implementing actions for meaningful change. The four steps to the process are:

  1. Step 1: Onboarding

Agree objectives and explore potential challenges and friction points before gathering insight into women+’s experiences.

  2. Step 2: Interrogate existing insights

Assess the experiences of women+ in action sport to understand the current reality and develop a clear picture of gender.

  3. Step 3: Plan the approach

Identify examples of inclusive practice and map out stakeholders to identify strengths and opportunities for progress.

Identify new opportunities and opportunities to expand or strengthen existing work.

Prioritise opportunities, translate them into actions, and align resources to create a realistic, step-by-step plan.

  4. Step 4: Define outcomes & measure progress

Define success and set targets, then gather and evaluate evidence, to report progress and measure impact.
